Why Study Martial Arts?

Humans need community.  They also benefit greatly from exercise
both of the mind and body.  Forming connections with other people,
culture and your self is a gift that keeps on giving.  As you focus
internally both in mind and body your spirit awakens.  In Budo we
call this the Chi.  This is the vital energy of life.  It can be sculpted
like fine marble if the passion is great enough.  You are your own
temple and your mind and body are its garden.  I invite you to
explore and connect with the many cultures that comprise
Shukokai, the wonders of learning an ancient samurai art and most
importantly, to learn a little more about yourself.  You are more
powerful than you have ever dreamed.  It takes respect, effort,
patience, creativity and temperance to reach the ultimate goal of
awakening the power within.  This was Sensei Kimura's dream.
Please join us at Montclair Shukokai Karate as we carry on the
traditions of many Samurai who have devoted their lives to the
finest art.
Welcome to the Montclair Shukokai Karate website! The first green
dojo in the USA!

Shukokai karate is a traditional Japanese martial art based on Shito
Ryu (one of the first styles of karate) and refined by its founder,
Soke Shigeru Kimura, 10th Dan. The style is defined by a “one hit,
one kill” striking power and embodies the values of discipline, focus,
respect, patience, temperance, self-esteem, and creativity. Students
at the dojo (school) learn about technique, fighting, and the use of
weaponry on the path toward achieving their black belt.

Sempai Justin DeSalvo, 2nd Dan, is the owner and chief instructor at
Montclair Shukokai Karate. An avid student of the art for 35 years,
he trained with Soke Kimura before his death in 1995, and  has been
teaching karate for nearly a decade between his Sensei's dojo in
Tenafly and more recently at his own dojo, which opened in October
2006 in nearby Glen Ridge. Due to the popularity of the style and
Sempai Justin's learning-through-play teaching philosophy, the
school has relocated to larger space in Montclair to safely
accommodate the growing student body. Sempai Justin received his
Bachelor of Arts degree in child psychology from Wittenburg
University and worked in the medical diagnostic field before opening
his own dojo. His wife Lynn, who is also pursuing her black belt at
the school, is a speech and language pathologist specializing in
autistic spectrum disorders. She assists Sempai Justin in his teaching
and offers special needs support to children at the dojo.

Montclair Shukokai Karate offers people of all ages and abilities –
from age three to 100 - the opportunity to learn a martial art steeped
in history and culture and provides a wonderfully supportive
community for its students and their families. Students enjoy their
classes, special “Kids' Night Out” events, and birthday parties in a
clean and safe environment.

Located at 100 Grove Street in Montclair, New Jersey, it is the
United States first totally green dojo, an issue near and dear to
Sempai Justin's heart. In addition to the health benefits of a LEED
certified space, the dojo offers dedicated on-site parking, 2,400
square feet of space with vaulted ceilings, secure lockers, shower,
and state-of-the-art mats and equipment.

We invite you to browse around the site to learn more about the
karate style, its founder, and the Shukokai community, which
extends far beyond Montclair to the national and international
community as well. If you are interested in joining our dojo, please
stop by and learn about our pricing and if available, our special offers!
